Shop Management Frederick Winslow Taylor 9781374974142 Books

Shop Management is a small book by Fredrick Winslow Taylor that was published eight years before his famous The Principles of Scientific Management and is a true classic in management theories. The book doesn't read very easy though as it has evolved out of a talk and the book contains no major sections or headings, but it is just text going on for about 100 pages. The text is structured, but you'll need to discover the structure yourself (at least in the version I have).

Shop management is a fairly detailed explanation of Taylor's system of management. I could identify the following rough sections in the book:

1) The goal of high salary and high efficiency
2) Different management systems (including different piece work systems)
3) Division of labor (removing planning from the workforce)
4) Tasks of the planning department
5) Time studies

These are not actual sections in the book, but my interpretation.

Early on the book, Taylor sets the goal of increasing the salary of the workers and increasing the output. He does that by taking away the responsibility of how to do the job from the worker, standardizing it, and then asking workers to follow a strict standard. The payment system is then set up so that workers achieve extra pay if they are able to reach the output that was possible (according to measurements).

In order to achieve that, the lower level management roles need to be more specialized and the actual planning of the work has to be done by a separate department (the planning department) who measures the work, builds standards and sends instructions to the different people. In the factory, also additional "functional specialization" would help in improving the productivity and efficiency by limiting the scope of the work from people. All of this is based on standardization that need to be done following scientific studies of the work and time studies.

The book is short (though larger than principles of scientific management) with about 100 pages. Though the 100 pages is fairly dense text. I didn't found it an easy read and partly because it is a bit old-fashioned use of language. The lack of structure made it hard for me to read the book. The things that Taylor described were truly new and innovative for his time, that said, in a modern context a lot of the principles he applied would probably not be a good idea. So, from writing perspective and applicability to todays world, the book would only have 2 stars. From the perspective of the impact on the world in 1903 and from the historical management perspective, this would definitively be a five star book. Because of that, I decided to go with 3 stars. If you want to learn something about management, you'd better pick up a more modern book. If you want to know something about history and especially of scientific management, then this book is highly recommended.
